Jaroňkova Cottage

ObrázekThe winding Jaroňkova Lane, the “Golden Lane” of Štramberk, is a typical example of still inhabited and cared for timber houses in castle settlements. There is also the Jaroňkova Cottage, attached to a medieval fortification wall. This stylish café has a wide offer of coffees (e.g. with Štramberk wafers) that will help you rest up before your ascent to the Trúba Tower or to White Hill lookout tower.

The offer of Jaroňkova Cottage, like that of Jaroňkova pekárna, includes Štramberk Ears, at present even more famous since they are an EU registered trademark.

In her publication called “Co se jedlo pod štramberskou trúbou” PhDr. Anna Hrčková says: “Originally, they (Štramberk Ears) were made of bread (rye) flour sold by bakers. After their trade was cancelled the flour was longer been available and that is why also the recipe had to be changed – rye flour has been replaced by wheat flour. According to experience and expert opinion it is the quality of the flour which decides. The secret of their taste lies in the individual use of their ingredients.” Therefore, each family guarded their “guaranteed recipe” for Štramberk Ears. One of them is presented also in the above-mentioned publication:

Blend 20 dkg of powder sugar with three eggs then beat the mixture with 10 dkg of warm melted honey. Add 50 dkg of smooth flower and ground spices: 1 flat teaspoon of badian, the same quantity of cinnamon, half a teaspoon of anise, lemon peel, and knead a dough. Let the dough sit overnight and on the following day roll it out into a sheet. Then cut out circles and place them on a baking tray and bake them in the oven. While they are hot, roll them into cornets and put them either in a metal ear mould or in glasses.

(Book published by PhDr. Anna Hrčková: „Co se jedlo pod štramberskou Trúbou“ is available from January 2007 in the Information Centre Relax in the Beskydy Foothills).

Štramberk wafers

ObrázekAside from freshly baked crunchy small croissants and the “Štramberk ears” the cafe offers new Štramberk wafers. It is a long lost time since the romantic town “Štramberk” was swarming with "spa dandies”. The renowned climatic and herbal spa in Štramberk was founded by an herbalist and homeopath Jan Bajer in 1855. The spa baths are just a memory today. However, even today you can still taste the spa wafers and feel the loving care Relax studios offer to Štramberk visitors at the foothills of the Beskydy mountains.
